Montana State University Billings is accepting applications for a Dean of the College of Education. MSUB is seeking a visionary, collaborative, competent and successful academic leader. 

Duties and Responsibilities 
The Dean of the College of Education is the intellectual and administrative leader of the college, and the chief advocate for the mission and purpose of the college’s academic programs. The Dean of the College of Education promotes professional development, faculty research, and other scholarly and creative activity. The Dean’s responsibilities include leading the development, evaluation, and administration of the college curriculum on campus and online. The successful candidate will be a leader comfortable with delegating authority while maintaining accountability for results and will have sufficient administrative experience to provide inspiring leadership. The Dean provides academic support by fostering a positive and productive work environment, a spirit of collaborative leadership, and a commitment to inclusive excellence. The Dean reports to the Provost/Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and works in consultation with an open and innovative Deans’ Council.


The Dean will:

  • Work collaboratively with faculty to articulate and implement a vision for growing the college in innovative ways.

  • Understand and effectively manage organizational improvement processes.

  • Seek out innovations to meet market demands in urban, rural, and tribal communities across Montana, including efforts to recruit and retain students from diverse backgrounds.

  • Forge relationships with area tribal and community colleges.

  • Foster partnerships with regional P-12 public and private schools and community agencies.

  • Support the work of the Montana Center for Inclusive Education and work collaboratively with the Director to promote the unique role MSU Billings has as a leader in the area of disability.

  • Advocate for the college to the public and various agencies including the Office of Public Instruction, MUS Board of Regents, Board of Public Education, Billings Public Schools, Montana Council of Deans, and the surrounding communities.

  • Work productively within the parameters of a collective bargaining agreement and process.


The Dean will:

  • Work with faculty leaders to administer effective and efficient faculty evaluation and to promote faculty development and growth.

  • Implement the strategic plan for the college and the university.

  • Be experienced in regional and special accreditation for education programs and provide leadership and direction for outcomes-based program assessment.

  • Work closely with the chancellor, provost/academic vice, college deans, department chairs, and professional staff.

  • Work collaboratively with the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Allied Health Professions to integrate secondary education and general education across the three colleges.

  • Work collaboratively to identify and advocate for resources, including technology, to support the College of Education.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • An earned doctorate degree in education from a regionally accredited institution.

  • At least 5 years of successful and progressive experience in higher education including both administration (e.g., program director, department chair, associate dean) and full-time teaching.

  • Familiarity with state-level teacher licensure processes.

  • Experience with CAEP Accreditation

  • Proven fiscal/budgetary experience that demonstrates an understanding of the complexities of higher education and demonstrate the ability to develop, recommend, and administer the college budget

  • Proven ability to advise the Provost/Vice Chancellor in academic, budget, facilities, and support matters
