The Jerome J. Lohr College of Engineering at South Dakota State University invites visionary, forward-thinking, and transformative leaders to apply for the Associate Dean for Research.

RESPONSIBILITIES: 
The Associate Dean for Research (ADR) is responsible for providing strategic leadership, oversight, and advancement of the research and economic development mission of the Jerome J. Lohr College of Engineering (JJLCOE).

The ADR reports directly to the Dean of the College of Engineering and works closely with the University’s Vice President for Research (VPR) to ensure college research and economic development activities are aligned with the university’s goals. The ADR also interfaces with the ADR counterparts in respective colleges at SDSU to promote research and economic development as well as identifying opportunities for collaboration. The ADR will have a strong desire to develop corporate applied research connection on behalf of the JJCOE.

The ADR will lead the implementation of a strategic plan for development and advancement of research efforts and outcomes in the JJLCOE. The plan will be coordinated with all units within the JJLCOE and communicated to Department Heads, Directors, and Faculty. Similarly, the ADR will review research and economic development strategies and activities within each department to ensure alignment with JJLCOE goals for adaptation in an evolving research landscape. Also, the ADR will be the lead for implementing the symbiotic strategic plan with the Research Park at SDSU and will work closely with the Executive Director of the Research Park.

The ADR will also work with the Dean and the SDSU Foundation Development Officer to promote and develop external research funding support for the college faculty and for graduate fellowships, matching funds, startup funds, undergraduate research support, endowed chairs, and other similar programs that support JJLCOE research.

The ADR will review open position descriptions with Department Heads with respect to alignment consistent with JJLCOE research goals and mission priorities and participate in review of candidates brought to campus for interviews.

The ADR will lead the College’s Office of Engineering Research (OER) and its personnel including administrative and grant writing support. The OER provides pre-award support for the JJLCOE research faculty. The OER tracks grant applications and awards and provides a statistical analysis of the performance of JJLCOE in research and external funding. The ADR is expected to engage our College’s faculty, postdoctoral researchers, and students in opportunities for cutting-edge research with sponsors from federal and state agencies, national laboratories, and regional, national, and international industry sponsors.

The ADR will be responsible for communicating the performance of the JJLCOE research and economic development activities to all interested internal and external groups and stakeholders.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 
The ADR will have a minimum of an MS degree in Engineering with at least 10 years’ experience with industrial/corporate/Federal entities. The ADR will need to demonstrate successful experience in research development and external funding and program marketing. Successful candidates must have a strong commitment to academic and research excellence. A valid driver’s licenses or ability to obtain within thirty days of hire is required. Effective written and verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills are request. Applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S. Sponsorship is not available for this position.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 
A Ph.D. in Engineering or a closely related field with at least five years of successful experience in research development and external private and federal funding. Candidates who have demonstrated success in substantial research funding, development implementation, and commercialization commensurate to a full professor are desired. Candidates who are actively engaged and have success in interdisciplinary, emerging research initiatives are also desired.

Department Description and Cultural Expectations

SDSU is South Dakota’s Land Grant institution and its largest institution of higher education with a current enrollment of approximately 12,500 students. The Jerome J. Lohr College of Engineering currently has approximately 1,500 undergraduates and 200 MS and PhD students conducting world-class research with a regional emphasis; and providing technical assistance to existing and emerging businesses, industry, and government. The College offers AS, BS, MS, and Ph.D. degrees in Agriculture and Biosystems Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Construction and Operations Management, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Math, Statistics, Data Science, and Mechanical Engineering.
