Physics and Engineering Instructional Lab Coordinator (S03033)

Job Description Summary

Montgomery College, Rockville Campus, has an immediate need for a full-time, bargaining, non-exempt, Instructional Lab Coordinator (S03033). The work schedule is 40 hours per week. The work involves set-up and organizing work areas for classroom instruction, and coordinating with and providing instructional assistance services to faculty. Plan activities, order and pick-up supplies and materials, maintain facility, check/maintain equipment, and schedule student assistants and/or staff in order to meet instructional objectives. The incumbent follows specific guidelines developed by faculty/supervisor in providing instructional support in the laboratory and the completed work is reviewed for adherence to the guidelines and accuracy of the information provided.er base on the needs of the department.

Job Description

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Coordinate the use of Physics equipment and supplies used by the department as well as prepare and set up/dismantle all Physics and Physical Science labs

  • Supervise students in the Engineering shop

  • Maintain an up to date inventory of supplies and equipment required by the various courses.  Purchase materials, equipment, and instruments when necessary

  • Initiate and coordinate the requisitioning of Physics instructional supplies, equipment, contracted services, equipment rental, equipment repair, and equipment replacement

  • Perform regular repairs and preventive maintenance on Physics lab equipment as appropriate. 

  • Provide specifications and vendor information for projected needs. 

  • Interview, train, supervise and evaluate student assistants hired under the college work study and/or student assistant programs

  • Maintain Physics/Physical Science labs, shop, and prep rooms as safe working environments to ensure departmental guidelines and procedures are being followed in the classroom/labs and review departmental facilities and equipment to prevent potentially hazardous conditions and to ensure safe practices.   This includes arranging for the proper and safe disposal of all hazardous waste products from labs and maintaining Safety Data Sheet notebooks and on-line chemical inventory.

Ensure that all equipment used in physics labs are in proper, safe working condition

  • Calibrate equipment as necessary.

  • Make minor repairs or adjustments as necessary.

  • Arrange for equipment to be returned for repair if needed.

  • Purchase new or upgraded equipment as necessary determined by discussion with lab manager and faculty.

 

Assist students as necessary

  • Monitor open lab times to ensure proper equipment use.

  • Check out/in equipment for student use outside of class as well as maintain records of such.

 

Support the safe, smooth, and responsible departmental processes

  • Maintains a safe and healthy environment by careful supervision of laboratories and laboratory equipment as well as ensure that all departmental rules, procedures, and guidelines are being follow.  Advise on needed additions or changes as necessary.

  • Assists with the maintenance of departmental records of expenditures and coordinates the paperwork associated with procurement

  • Coordinates the disposal of hazardous waste from the department.

  • Maintain inventory listing of equipment and materials.

  • Update chemical inventory and MSDS spreadsheet.

  • Hire and train student employees as needed.

Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship

  • Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Engineering or Physical Science.

  • Four years of experience performing instructional assistant/associate duties.

  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, procedures, principles, practices, and techniques of assigned subject area work, tools, equipment and materials, and hazard/safety precautions.

  • Considerable knowledge of instructional technology, equipment and educational materials employed in assigned instructional laboratory, and administrative practices and procedures, including purchasing and record keeping.

  • Familiarity with the principles and practices of learning as applied to the role of instructional support staff and laboratory procedures.

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Two or more years experience working in a science laboratory setting in community college or university as a lab coordinator/assistant.

  • Experience supervising student laboratory assistants.

  • Experience with maintaining an inventory system.

  • Knowledge and experience with purchasing procedures and record keeping skills.

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of budget preparation.
