Mentor: Yogesh VohraPh.D., Professor, Department of Physics, email: ykvohra@uab.edu.

The high pressure materials research group has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral scholar in the Department of Physics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. We are seeking individuals with expertise in crystal structure refinements at high pressure, shear strength measurements in diamond anvil cells, and research at the synchrotron facilities. The project involves experimental studies of phase transformations and shear strength measurements on metals, alloys, and novel superhard materials at ultrahigh pressures in collaboration with theorists doing density functional calculations. The successful applicant would have access to the High Pressure Laboratory, Diamond Microfabrication Laboratory, and the National Synchrotron Facilities in the United States. The research would also involve fabricating nanocrystalline diamond micro-anvils and toroidal diamond anvils for generation of near Terapascal (TPa) pressures. A Ph.D. in physics or materials science and engineering is desirable for this position.

The anticipated average salary for this positon is $50,000/year and can be negotiated depending on years of experience after doctoral degree. The program offers fringe benefits including health insurance. The position will have an initial appointment for one-year but can be extended to a period of three-years depending on satisfactory performance. Please e-mail a curriculum vitae along with the names of the three references to Prof. Yogesh Vohra at ykvohra@uab.edu.
