Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab

Job Description

Description

Are you passionate about using innovation, emerging technology, and critical thinking to push the boundaries of cyber security and solve system-level technical challenges involving the defense of the U.S. and our allies?

Do you wish to gain experience with solving operational challenges at scale and applying systems engineering principles to develop mission-focused capabilities?

Are you excited about working with smart people who are motivated and driven to solve some of the nation’s toughest cyber challenges?

If so, we believe there are opportunities here for you and we think you should apply to join our team at APL’s Capabilities Development Group (QCC).

We work as a multi-disciplinary team of software engineers, systems engineers, and domain experts to build and implement robust and effective systems using the most powerful capabilities available. We care about making a real-world impact and solving the operational needs of the U.S. government agencies and military organizations that we serve.

We are seeking both Software Developers and Cyber Systems Engineers to help us pursue new and innovative ways to enhance our nation’s cyber capabilities and improve task efficiency.

As a member of our team you will...

Software Developer

  • Participate in agile development teams that design, implement, test, document, and maintain software-based applications that address new and unsolved sponsor problems
  • Work with sponsors and end users in defense or intelligence organizations to understand their operational needs and identify requirements.
  • Seek out innovative ways to enhance software efficiency, security, and stability
  • Integrate and extend open source or commercial capabilities to enhance cyber capability

Cyber Systems Engineer

  • Collaborate with operational partners to understand and detail their needs, and translate them into well-defined requirements and a comprehensive architecture
  • Develop and apply a detailed understanding of computer, network, systems, and cybersecurity concepts to create, assess, and operationalize novel approaches to solving cyber system security challenges in operational environments
  • Explore promising new research areas and seek ways to apply promising ideas to today's problems. Share approaches and methods with others within APL to spread knowledge base

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications if you...

  • Have a PhD degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics or cybersecurity-related field
  • Have experience developing software using Java/Kotlin, Python, C#, JavaScript/TypeScript, C/C++, Rust, Golang, or equivalent
  • Have experience developing concepts, systems, or analytics, with an understanding of systems engineering or operational planning
  • Have strong analytical and problem-solving skills, excellent interpersonal skills, outstanding oral and written communication skills, good organizational skills, and the ability to work in teams
  • Are able to obtain an Interim Secret Clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a Secret security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...

  • Have experience using web application frameworks and related knowledge base such as React, Vue.js, HTML5, CSS3, JSON/XML, jQuery, D3, SVG, RESTful web services, or (No)SQL.
  • Can apply software development skills to different domains and subject matters (e.g. biotechnology, cyber security, etc.).
  • Have knowledge of geospatial information systems, deep learning, and computer vision
  • Have experience in DevSecOps, and/or network security and systems integration
  • Have experience with Department of Defense and/or Intelligence Community cyber operations/mission forces
  • Have experience in conducting research, development, and testing of cyber capabilities
  • Have experience in the development of related documents that define processes, solutions, requirements, and specifications for government agencies (military, federal departments/agencies, state, and local) and public organizations to collaborate and achieve greater cybersecurity
  • Hold an active Secret or Top Secret security clearance and can ultimately obtain TS/SCI level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information.
