Organizational Unit Overview
The Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology is dedicated to the discovery, development, and promotion of biomedical knowledge involving cell biology and the anatomical sciences of Gross Anatomy, Developmental Anatomy, Histology, and Neuroanatomy. Through this mission, we aim to improve human health through innovative educational programs and excellence in research and scholarly activities in a dynamic and diverse learning community.
The Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology is located in the Brody Medical Sciences Building on the west campus of East Carolina University and has fifteen faculty, eight staff, two research fellows, two office support staff, and six to ten doctoral students. Our faculty are actively involved with research areas that include signal transduction; stem cells; educational models and distance learning; cellular senescence and determinants of radiosensitivity in cancer; rearrangements of the cytoskeleton that occur during spermatogenesis; role of delta-catenin, presenilin and cadherins in synaptic remodeling and in cancer; function of tight junctions and claudins in ionic and tissue homeostasis; hyaluronan-CD44 interactions and their influence on BMP-initiated Smad signaling and other signaling pathways; and CD44-initiated signaling pathways that result in enhanced MMP production and extracellular degradation.
Throughout the brief history of the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University, the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology has had an active role in training graduate students. Our former students now hold prestigious postdoctoral, faculty, and professional positions throughout the United States. In addition to our graduate program, we provide instruction to medical, nursing, physical therapy, and physician assistant students.
Job Duties
Research (70%):
  • The faculty researcher will be responsible for independent and collaborative development, implementation, and analysis of scientific research in the discovery of regulatory and health modifiers in relation to fatty acid metabolism, especially in connection with exercise, metabolic physiology, and nutrition. Duties will include hypothesis development, literature review, development of experimental plans, collection of data, supervising of undergraduate research students and graduate research students, performing and overseeing data collection procedures, performing and supervising experimental procedures, review of data for quality control, and performing and supervision of data entry/data analysis and interpretation. Specific research skills required include the ability to perform mitochondrial isolation and respirometry experiments using Oroboros instrumentation, lipid extractions, lipidomic analysis, breeding and experimental design for genetic mouse models for metabolic studies, conduct mouse dietary studies and metabolic assessments, western blotting, RT-PCR, genotyping PCR, and histology including collection of tissues, tissue processing/sectioning, staining/immunohistology, imaging, and analysis.
  • The faculty researcher will also be responsible for the creative works that involve the development and generation of independent and collaborative presentations, publications, and grants. The researcher will work towards independence through the development of research tools, building a record of success and independence, and heavy emphasis will be placed on grant writing to achieve independent funding.

Course Director (30%):
  • Contribute to and enhance the departmental educational mission with responsibility for directing the Medical Histology course in the Brody School of Medicine. The responsibility will also include teaching students enrolled in the medicine program at the Brody School of Medicine. Specifically, the candidate will be responsible for the overall management of the course, which includes syllabus development, scheduling, quiz/test management, etc. In addition, the candidate will contribute to the teaching of aspects of medical histology via didactic lectures and flipped classroom approaches.

Ph.D., DSc, D.Phil, or MD in Anatomy, Physiology, or closely related field. 3 + years of post-doctoral experience.
