Position Summary

The Communications Consultant 3 is a full-time, classified position in the Public Information Office at North Seattle College. This position is responsible for coordinating comprehensive marketing, branding and communications campaigns that will drive enrollments, increase public awareness of the college and support our current students in achieving their goals. This position will promote North Seattle College both externally and internally through a variety of marketing and communications efforts, and also support the college's public and media relations work.
This position reports directly to the Executive Director of Communications. The primary job location is the North Seattle College campus. Some travel within the college's service district will be required, along with evening and weekend hours as needed.

Essential Functions


  • Develop and implement comprehensive marketing and branding initiatives for the college.

  • Assist the Executive Director of Communications in coordinating the purchase and placement of advertising in print, broadcast and electronic media outlets, and assist in negotiating and maintaining advertising/media contracts.

  • Work directly with campus departments and programs to create and implement marketing and communications plans for student recruitment, retention and persistence.

  • Support, assist in and/or lead the production of marketing materials, including brochures, fliers, advertising copy, email content, video and radio scripts, etc.

  • Assist in production and dissemination of press releases and public service announcements to promote the college's major activities and events; maintain a positive working relationship with various media representatives, and ensure regular contact with target media.

  • Determine need, write copy and generate ideas for various publications, including North's website news center and employee newsletter.

  • Create content for the college's social media platforms on a regular basis, including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

  • Carefully edit own copy to ensure writing is succinct and appropriate for the participant audience.

  • Conduct marketing research and assess marketing outcomes.

  • Ensure articulation of the college's desired image and position, and consistent communication of the brand, to the college's internal and external constituencies. Work with the Executive Director of Communications to develop and administer the college's marketing budget for maximum effectiveness.

  • Represent North as a member of appropriate boards and committees.

  • Supervise maintenance of ongoing news coverage file.

  • Work with the Web team to develop content for website projects and make content updates for professional/technical programs. 

  • Collaborate with colleagues on website, marketing, public relations and other projects as needed. 

  • Assist with administrative duties of the Public Information Office as assigned.

  • Experience planning large events, or working as large event support staff.

  • Help support and generate projects for work study help.


Required Education, Experience, Abilities


  • Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, marketing or related field from an accredited college or university.

  • Minimum two years of full-time work experience in marketing, media relations, communications and/or public relations.

  • Minimum two years of full-time work experience with internal communications.

  • Possess strong interpersonal communication and collaboration skills; experience working effectively with persons from diverse backgrounds, including racial, ethnic, religious, gender, sexual orientation and socio-economic, as well as those with physical and learning disabilities.

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills. Experience coordinating marketing, advertising, and/or public relations efforts for an organization or company.

  • Conceptual and practical understanding and/or experience using social media tools, such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, to communicate effectively with a wide range of potential and enrolled students, community organizations and/or agencies and employers.  

  • Conceptual understanding and experience of local, regional or national community organizations, publications and media serving diverse and nontraditional communities.  Demonstrated ability to think creatively and devise unique marketing strategies that obtain proven, measurable results and the ability to develop and analyze data to track and assess marketing efforts.

  • Experience with Microsoft Office (including Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Outlook) and Adobe Creative Suite.

  • Detail oriented, organized, self-motivated, and proven ability to work independently and balance a variety of tasks and deadlines accurately under deadline pressure.

  • Ability to work some evening and weekend hours on occasion as required.
