Full Job Description

Open Date: September 18, 2020

Close Date: October 16, 2020

We Are:

Fermilab is America’s premier laboratory for particle physics and accelerator research, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. We support discovery science experiments in Illinois and South Dakota and at locations around the world, including Canada, mountaintops in Arizona and Chile, and the South Pole.

Fermilab’s Linac has been in operation for almost 50 years. In approximately five years, it will be replaced by the 800 MeV PIP-II superconducting Linac. In its current configuration, the Linac delivers H- ions at 400MeV injected by charge exchange into the Booster synchrotron. The resulting protons are accelerated by the Booster and through the other machines in the acceleration chain to meet the demand of High Energy Physics (HEP) experiments. Despite its age, the Linac is the most stable accelerator in the Fermilab complex, reliably sending 25 mA in daily operations. An operating machine such as this one is well-understood and maintained by experienced and skilled technicians. This constitutes an ideal and unique environment to develop, prototype and validate practical machine learning techniques by allowing us to conduct beam studies and compare the results to simulations. Our goal is to integrate machine learning (ML) to Linac operations, and in particular for RF control. The successful applicant will learn Linac operations, physics and ML. The position may also provide opportunities for involvement in the new super conducting Linac.

The Accelerator Division is seeking a highly qualified candidate to fill a Postdoctoral Research Associate position in the Proton Source Department to work on Linac research and development.

The position is for a term of up to three (3) years, with the potential for extension considered on a yearly basis thereafter.

You Will

  • Be intimately involved operations and beam studies in Linac.
  • Be focused on the implementation of ML to the RF regulation system.
  • Program FPGA boards, particle simulations, interpret and publish experimental results.
  • Abide by and be responsible for performing all duties in accordance with all environmental, health and safety regulations and practices pertinent to this position.
  • Respect, understand and value individual differences that embody the principles of diversity.

We Are Looking For

  • PhD in Physics or related discipline by the time of the appointment
  • Strong record of recent accomplishments in experimental physics
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills as demonstrated by presentations at conferences and a record of publication(s) in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Experience with accelerator physics or interest in accelerator physics
  • Candidate must demonstrate some ability to perform basic engineering tasks
  • Candidate must have some programming ability, like Python, and be able to learn how to run programs like Quartus and Tracewin
  • Candidate must work on a flex schedule and be able to thrive in a team environment.

Application Instructions

Interested candidates should submit via Academic Jobs Online:

  • Cover letter
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Research Statement
  • Publication List
  • Three Reference Letters (to be submitted by the reference writers at the AJO site).
