JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The McEntaffer Research Group (mcentaffergroup.psu.edu ) is looking to fill a postdoctoral position within the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics at The Pennsylvania State University. The group specializes in the design, fabrication, and implementation of grating-based astronomical spectrographs. There are three main areas of our research group:

  • We study nanofabrication techniques for UV and X-ray reflection gratings.
  • We are involved with multiple NASA suborbital rocket launches.
  • We have several additional projects that have grown from our nanofabrication experience.

Applicants with a PhD in Astronomy, Physics, or Material Science and experience in the three areas listed above are strongly encouraged to apply. Experience with nanofabrication techniques is required. Experience with electron beam lithography, plasma and chemical etching, deposition, SEM and AFM metrology, and nanoimprint lithography is highly desirable. Experience with suborbital rocket detectors and electronics systems is also highly desirable. In addition to nanofabrication responsibilities, this position will provide assistance with the integration and testing of new CMOS- and CCD-based payload cameras for upcoming missions. Experience with readout electronics and detector testing is desirable. Finally, the tangential projects in which we are involved require additional assistance. These include formulating new mission ideas for future funding, photonics experiments with physics colleagues, and new nanofabrication methods for growth in our grating research. The applicant will be expected to contribute to these studies.

Applications must be submitted electronically and include a CV and contact information for three references.

This is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with possibility of renewal. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. The salary will be in accordance with postdoctoral salaries at PSU.
