We are looking for a Veterinary Technician II, to join the dynamic Small Animal Critical Care department of our Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital! Required Education and Experience:

  • Associate's degree in veterinary technology, biomedical science, animal science or any equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Two years technical experience in veterinary medicine.

Required Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Basic computer skills in word processing, spreadsheets, and billing entry.
  • Strong animal handling skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and positively at all levels within the critical care service and the Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clients.
  • Be willing to grow professionally and acquire new skills.

Other Requirements or Other Factors:

  • No inhibiting allergies to animals, hay, or dust.
  • Able to lift heavy loads.
  • May require working alternate shifts, holidays, weekends, and on-call duty for sick-call and ventilator call.

  • General understanding of equipment used in a veterinary medical teaching hospital.

Preferred Licenses, Certifications and Registrations:

  • Certification as a Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT).
  • Veterinary Technician Specialist (ECC).
  • Veterinary Technician Specialist in Emergency and Critical Care (VTS).

Responsibilities:

  • Assists in the instruction of interns and students. Instructs, guides and supervises students in proper clinical techniques to support patient care. Participate in case rounds discussion, discharges, and follow-up (including post discharge courtesy calls, benign lab work and test results, medication refills).  Provides physical restraint for safe handling of patient animals.
  • Provide support for diagnostics (abdominal ultrasound, radiology, blood testing sample submission) and procedures (thoracostomy tube, abdominocentesis, central line, urinary catheter, and feeding tube placement; anesthesia). Administer patient medications as directed by the clinician. Monitor fluid therapy. Perform pain score assessments. Place, maintain, and troubleshoots central and peripheral IV catheters. Provides assistance with patients requiring one-on-one care.  Feed patients according to clinician's orders. Maintain a clean and sanitary patient environment. Perform other routine tasks involved in daily patient care, as directed by the clinician.  Candidates are not expected to be immediately proficient in the following responsibilities, but should have a desire to learn: Managing patients requiring mechanical ventilation, CRRT, or intermittent hemodialysis cases; high-flow-nasal cannulae oxygen therapy management; tracheostomy and chest tubes management and troubleshooting; vasopressor therapy management and titration; intravenous nutrition administration; blood collection and transfusion therapy.  Provide support to other services within the VMTH.
  • Assist in creation, management, and maintenance of in-house blood bank program.
  • Monitor patients under sedation and general anesthesia for therapeutic and diagnostic procedures (CT, wound management, etc.). Record data regarding patient’s physical and medical status. Record all medications administered. Record fluid types and volumes administered. Record information regarding urine output, mentation, appetite, and other parameters as needed. Record changes in the medical orders, as directed by the clinician. Capture and inputs fees into the electronic medical record system.
  • Provide self-test and maintenance for ECC equipment.
  • Facilitates continuing education, participates in seminars by teaching and attending, participates in laboratory instruction. Provide CE and rounds topics for hospital staff, house officers, students, and referring veterinarians (CE). Successful candidates are expected to obtain certification in VTS (ECC) and RECOVER CPR (Instructor), if not already obtained. Anticipated timeline is 2 years for completion of RECOVER CPR Instructor certification and 4 years for completion of VTS.
  • Provides oversight of patients housed in isolation. May require working alternate shifts, holidays, weekends and on-call duty. Maintains certification or licensure where appropriate; radiation safety, infection control, current rabies vaccination, monitor titers, and aseptic technique. Participates in clinical and basic research programs as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
