Job Description:
Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

The Department of Animal Science in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the Agricultural Entrepreneurship Initiative (AgEI) at Iowa State University in Ames, IA, are seeking an assistant professor in male reproductive physiology and innovation/entrepreneurship.  This is a full-time, tenure-track, 9-month appointment with responsibilities of research (60%), teaching (35%), and service 5%. There is an expectation of summer work, with remuneration, from departmental or external sources, including about teaching and learning efforts with AgEI programming.

The successful applicant will possess expertise in molecular and translational aspects of male food animal reproductive physiology with a major focus on boar and minor focus on bull.  The person is expected to establish a vigorous, extramurally funded research program in male reproductive physiology with relevance to the animal industries of Iowa. Research should support future precision livestock production with emphasis on sire reproductive performance. The reproductive physiology research approach could be basic, applied, translational or a combination.   The individual will direct the Department’s Single Cell Phenomics Unit, support external stakeholders through andrology analytical services, and internal next generation, single cell research.

The incumbent will teach undergraduate and graduate courses focused on animal physiology and innovation/entrepreneurship in Animal Science. Additionally, this position will undergraduate students in Animal Science, Dairy Science and Pre-veterinary Medicine programs and provide support (teaching, advising, and mentoring) for the university’s and college’s growing entrepreneurial programs.   Responsibilities related to teaching and innovation/entrepreneurship may include commercialization of a technology from a research program, engaging with entrepreneurs/early-stage businesses to support their development, and/or creating an entrepreneurship-related experiential learning program. They will support the Agricultural Entrepreneurship Initiative in the college.

Proposed start date: Soonest start date is 5/1/2021, or as negotiated by new hire.



Required Minimum Qualifications:

PhD in Animal Physiology or closely allied area by start date.

Teaching experience in higher education.


Preferred Qualifications:

Demonstrated knowledge of the Iowa animal industries

Postdoctoral research experience in animal physiology and male food animal reproductive physiology.

Demonstration ability to secure extramural, competitive funding.

Demonstrated experience with innovation and entrepreneurship activities

Experience teaching animal physiology at the undergraduate level.

 


Department/Program & College Description:

The Department of Animal Science (http://www.ans.iastate.edu ), administered by the College of Agriculture and Life Science, has a 121-year-old history of excellence in teaching, research and extension and outreach. It has international expertise in animal husbandry, animal breeding and genetics, animal nutrition, meat science, physiology, microbiology and immunobiology, biochemistry and the intersection of these disciplines with many other agricultural and life sciences. The department has a diverse group of faculty and students consisting of 53 faculty (tenure, tenure-track and term), 22 collaborating faculty and 76 staff employees. There are department has 1,000 undergraduate students with majors in Animal Science and Dairy Science and minors in Animal Science and Meat Science. The department offers M.S. and Ph.D. degrees and has over 75 graduate students and multiple post-doctoral students and visiting scientists of assisting with research. The department hosts three centers serving animal agriculture industries: Iowa Pork Industry Center, Iowa Beef Center and the Egg Industry Center. The Department of Animal Science manages the Meat Science Laboratory and, with the college, the field stations for dairy, beef, equine, poultry, sheep and swine. Several of these facilities are in the process of being upgraded including the construction of a new poultry and swine farm facilities and new feed mill. Additionally, the department has a long-standing relationship with the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine, the National Centers for Animal Health, the National Animal Disease Center and the National Laboratory for Agriculture and the Environment of the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Ames.
