Position Overview

The work will focus on field- and greenhouse-based experiments, with an emphasis on issues of relevance to semi-arid cropping systems. Research topics include, but not limited to, plant nutrition and fertilizer management, irrigation water management, crop physiology (nutrient and water use efficiency), cropping system diversification (crop rotations, cover crops), and remote sensing and other precision sensing methodologies for sustainable crop production.

The person filling this position will fulfill several essential roles in the program. He/she will help implement current research projects, including field, greenhouse, and lab work. The incumbent will work under Dr. Walsh and oversee fellow employees.

Unit Overview

The Department of Plant Sciences works to advance research and address many local, regional and global challenges such as breeding plants to tolerate drought-stress, developing sustainable cropping practices and conserving plant species for future generations. Crop science, horticulture, and plant biotechnology and genomics are the main areas of study and interest in our department. We prepare students for careers in the rapidly changing fields of applied and basic plant sciences and in modern production agriculture.

Position Responsibilities


Key Accountability Research:
Job Duties

Conduct research on plant nutrition and fertilizer management, irrigation water management, crop physiology (nutrient and water use efficiency), cropping system diversification (crop rotations, cover crops), and remote sensing and other precision sensing methodologies for sustainable crop production.

Key Accountability Presentation of Research Results:
Job Duties

Publish high quality, peer reviewed journal articles and present at national and international meetings and conferences.

Key Accountability Supervision:
Job Duties

General supervision of related field, greenhouse, and field research activities.


Required Experience

- Experience with written communication skills producing high quality peer reviewed papers.

- Experience presenting at professional meetings.

- Experience summarizing and interpreting experimental data showing analytical and critical thinking skills.

- Experience using computer software and applications for statistical procedures, word processing, and scientific graphics programming.

Required Education

- Ph.D. in Plant Sciences, Soil Sciences, Crop Sciences or related field.

Required Licensures, Certifications or other
Additional Preferred

- A strong and relevant research background and ability to pay attention to detail.

- Interest in (and experience with) precision agriculture tools such as sensor-based technologies, crop and soil sensors, and irrigated crop production systems.

Physical Requirements

- Ability to safely drive and perform work with a truck.

- Ability to lift, carry and/or otherwise move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

Working Conditions

Working outdoors.
