Department Description

The mission of the Division of Diagnostic Sciences is to serve the people and dental profession of the State by providing a center for teaching, scholarly activity, and patient care concerning the diagnosis and management of disorders and abnormalities of the oral and maxillofacial region. To fulfill this mission, the Department provides instruction for dental auxiliary, predoctoral, and postdoctoral education students, as well as graduate students of other schools in the University. Faculty are committed to the advancement of teaching through the development of enhanced and innovative teaching methods. The research mission of the Department is grounded in the basic physical, chemical, biological, epidemiological, and clinical sciences. Department research is directed toward:

1. The creation of knowledge through biological and clinical investigations of the diseases of the oral and maxillofacial region, and
2. Laboratory and clinical testing of new diagnostic systems.

Members of the Department of Diagnostic Sciences provide patient care at the pre-doctoral, postdoctoral, and private practice levels in the areas of microbiology, oral and maxillofacial pathology, oral and maxillofacial radiology, orofacial pain and sleep medicine. The Department also provides continuing education to the dental profession in North Carolina and beyond for the purposes of improving diagnosis and management of diseases and abnormalities of the oral and maxillofacial region.

The UNC Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology Laboratory, functions as an independent private practice cost center within the Dental Faculty Practice providing diagnostic surgical pathology services to the Dentists and Physicians of the state of North Carolina, as well as a significant diaspora of clinicians throughout the mid-western and eastern United States. The service receives in excess of 8000 biopsy specimens a year and continues to increase yearly.

Position Description

The primary purpose of this position is to support the Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology Section of the Division. This position supports 2 full-time oral and maxillofacial pathologists, a medical laboratory supervisor, a laboratory technician, a part-time laboratory technician, and an oral and maxillofacial pathology residency program. The person in this position is responsible for the entry of registration information for patients in the electronic patient record system (EPIC). Initial patient information is entered into EPIC by the laboratory staff when patient specimens are received. This initial entry is done through the BEAKER Module of EPIC. When daily specimen accessioning has been completed, the specimen submission forms are brought to the oral pathology office where the Administrative Support Associate completes the patient registration in EPIC by entering all required demographics and insurance information for the patient. Completed final pathology reports and charges for pathology services cannot be entered and billed until a complete record is entered and saved in EPIC.

The Administrative Support Associate is the communication center of the Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology Laboratory, and is the main contact point for contributing providers, outside laboratories and patient inquiries. The person in this position is responsible for providing information to or collecting necessary information from these different areas. Patients with questions and concerns are assisted by the Administrative Support Associate to the extent possible, and/or referred to the appropriate area for further assistance. Physicians are directed to the requested pathologist.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Applies substantive knowledge of program policies and procedures that affect operations. Applies program knowledge to client situations; applies knowledge of program content and services in the analysis of information and decision-making.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of EPIC Electronic Health Record system.
