Position Description

The Histotechnologist will assist in receiving and preparing biopsy specimens for histologic evaluation and diagnosis by the oral pathologists in the Division of Diagnostic Sciences. This includes the following responsibilities:

Accessioning of Specimens: Specimens are received from doctors within the School, and from contributors outside of the ASOD in the private practice community. This position will assist the lead histotechnologist in receiving, logging in, and preparing the specimens for gross description by the pathologists, residents, or laboratory supervisor prior to specimen processing. At the direction of the laboratory supervisor or the lead histotechnologist, this position may be required to receive, log, and distribute specimens that are received for special procedures and consultation from outside laboratories.

Preparation of Biopsy Specimens: Specimens are prepared in an automated tissue processor where they are dehydrated and infiltrated with melted paraffin overnight. In the morning, the specimens are individually oriented in molds and embedded in paraffin blocks for sectioning by the histotechnologist and the lead histotechnologist into very thin sections mounted on glass slides and dried. The slides with dried sections are then loaded by the histotechnologist, at the direction of the lead histotechnologist, onto an automated slide stainer where they pass through multiple solutions that impart colored stains to the thin sections on the slide which are then sealed with a thin glass cover that permanently protects the specimen.

This position will assist the lead histotechnologist in maintaining an inventory of required materials, supplies, and solutions for the proper functioning of the laboratory. At the direction of the laboratory supervisor or lead histotechnologist, this position may generate a list of needed supplies. When supplies are received, the histotechnologist will assist the lead histotechnologist in labeling and storing all materials necessary for the continual operation of the laboratory.

This position will assist the lead histotechnologist in maintaining all glass and plasticware in a clean state, and for keeping the laboratory in general in a safe, clean and orderly fashion in compliance with University, State and Federal OSHA guidelines.
