Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow for the department of Medicine – Infectious Diseases with the New Jersey Medical School.  Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, the Postdoctoral Fellow will be investigating the mechanisms for low level MIC elevations to modern TB drugs that are unrelated to actual drug exposure. 
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Performs studies to understand the genetic mechanisms underlying low level MIC increase to Bedaquiline, Potamonid, and SQ109.
  • Performs studies to investigate the relationship between low level MIC increases and central carbon metabolism, respiration and efflux pumps.
  • Conducts additional experiments as needed.
  • Performs genetic manipulations of M. tuberculosis and other mycobacteria including cloning, and gene knockouts.
  • Prepares manuscripts for publication of data generated.
  • Communicates with and prepares written reports for academic and commercial collaborators.

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Doctoral Degree in relevant science. 
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience includes independent design and conduction of genetic and microbiological studies, experience performing unsupervised work in the BSLIII on M. tuberculosis, ability to analyze next generation DNA sequencing data.
  • Experience in automated, high-throughput fluidic studies of bacterial growth.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Occasional lifting of 20 pounds to a height of 6½ feet.
  • Hearing and speech capabilities necessary to communicate with other researchers and staff in person, on the telephone and by e-mail.
  • Vision capable of viewing gauges, computer monitors, charts, forms, text and numbers for prolonged periods.
  • Must be willing to work with small and large animals. 
Special Conditions
  • This includes training in BSL3 practices, and willingness to work with virulent and drug-resistant M. tuberculosis.
  • Must be available to work flexible hours including weekends and holidays when necessary to meet deadlines.
