Job Summary

Academic instructor assigned to face-to-face and on-line courses in accordance with the course syllabus and college policy. Courses include: Introduction to Sociology; Social Problems; Marriage & Family; Human Sexuality; American Minorities; Social Psychology; Drug Use & Abuse.

Required Qualifications

Master’s degree in Sociology, or a Master’s degree plus 18 graduate semester hours in Sociology
Effective community college or university teaching.
Demonstrated proficiency using computer applications, learning management systems (Canvas preferred), and current classroom learning technologies for effective teaching at the community college level.
Excellent communication skills, both oral and written; excellent interpersonal skills
Excellent organizational skills
Commitment to diversity
Commitment to academic excellence and exceptional service
Must possess a valid Texas Driver license, good driving record, and be insurable on Midland College’s insurance policy

Preferred Qualifications

PhD in Sociology
College/dual credit teaching experience
An additional 18+ graduate hours in one of the following teaching fields is also preferred: Anthropology, Government, Psychology

Essential Functions

Instruct students in assigned face-to-face and online courses in accordance with the course syllabus and college policy.
Plan and organize lectures, utilize research and reference materials.
Develop syllabi and other learning aids
Make continuous efforts to improve the quality of instruction by reviewing and utilizing appropriate methodologies, techniques, technologies, and delivery methods
Provide access to students by observing posted office hours, and utilizing electronic communication and other appropriate methods
Actively participate in the Sociology Department, including assisting with the maintenance and development of curriculum
Actively participate in the development and administration and reporting of core assessment
Submit required college reports and forms
Serve on departmental, division, and college-wide committees, as assigned
Successfully complete Quality Matters certification during first year of employment
Maintain professional relationships with students, colleagues, and the community
Participate in student recruitment and advising
Participate in graduation and other required official College functions
Perform other related tasks as assigned by the Department Chair, Dean, and/or Vice President of Instruction.

Physical Demands

The ability to perform work in a classroom and office setting
Frequently moves equipment or paperwork weighing up to 20 pounds
Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time
Use of manual dexterity
Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation
The person in this position frequently communicates with students; must be able to exchange accurate information
