Job Summary

The Child Health Evaluation and Research (CHEAR) Center, within the Division of General Pediatrics, is seeking a Center Manager for assistance with overall management of the center.  The CHEAR Center includes 18 core faculty research investigators and more than 40 research staff, fellows, and students. We conduct research and training in health outcomes and health policy across several core research themes, such as data science, emerging technologies, outcomes research, policy, and communications. Our work is multidisciplinary, encompassing epidemiology, health policy, health services research, general pediatrics, and pediatric subspecialties.  The successful candidate will enjoy working in a dynamic, collaborative environment and must have excellent organizational, planning, and communication skills. This position reports directly to the Center Faculty Director.  This position is funded through center funds.

The Susan B. Meister Child Health Evaluation and Research Center (CHEAR) at the University of Michigan is a multidisciplinary, health services research center, based in the Division of General Pediatrics.  Our multidisciplinary health services and policy research work encompasses general pediatrics, pediatric subspecialties, epidemiology, and health policy.  CHEAR collaborates with partners at more than 10 schools, colleges, and institutes and is funded by federal agencies (NIH, AHRQ, CDC, PCORI, HRSA), foundations, state government, and philanthropy. Our members are a policy resource, actively engaging and identifying current high-priority issues in child health for the advancement of child health.

CHEAR’s strength comes from its faculty, fellows, and staff who work together to make a difference in the lives of children through research. Our Faculty Investigators are core faculty members located on-site within the Center who serve as Principal Investigators conducting transformative research. Our Faculty Executive Representatives are comprised of colleagues from partner schools and colleges on the University of Michigan campus including business, engineering, law, public health, public policy, dentistry, social work, pharmacy, nursing, and education.  Our Research and Administrative Staff are talented and dedicated individuals who provide the support and expertise necessary to facilitate all aspects of our operations.

Responsibilities*
  • In partnership with the Center Faculty Director, develops and contributes to the overall strategy, direction, and vision of the Center.  Leads the coordination, launch, implementation, and expansion of new strategic initiatives.
  • Leads in the development, implementation, and administration of a variety of special projects and activities as directed and assigned by CHEAR Center leadership.
  • Leads, directs, and oversees special projects and initiatives for the Center, in partnership with the division administrator.
  • In partnership with the division administrator, coordinates and prepares documents and reports relating to Center’s project- and research-related initiatives, including preparation of the annual reports to the department and other stakeholders.
  • Leads activities for faculty recruitment and research staff hiring/management with the division administrator and division HR specialist.  Provides guidance and advice to research investigators in matters of research administration, including identifying research funding opportunities for investigators and ensuring that projects are adequately scoped and staffed.
  • Center liaison to the Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation, the School of Public Health, and other departments/units for the encouragement of scientific collaborations.  Leads continuing current collaborations and identifying and developing new partnerships in the Health Policy and Population Health Sciences Research communities at the University of Michigan and external research partners (e.g., the Michigan Department of Health and other governmental agencies).
  • Leads, coordinates, and implements all activities for the new postdoctoral fellowship training programs, including management of application process, assignment of mentors, and processes required documentation. Coordinates related educational activities including the CHEAR Research Seminar, the Work in Progress seminar, the Fellows seminar, the Working Group on Modeling Health and Economic Outcomes Seminar, and the Summer Internship Program.
  • Leads in the creation, development, and implementation of a comprehensive communication strategy for the Center, including website, social media, press releases, visual abstracts, other promotional materials.  Oversees implementation of these communication strategies including a social media strategic framework to disseminate research findings, strategies to foster collaborations, and development of a public presence for the Center. Oversees research and administrative staff in these communication activities.
  • In conjunction with Center Leadership, serve as lead in the design process for new suite of reporting tools.  This includes the development and implementation of a comprehensive group of materials to support relationships with external stakeholders, including formal and informal progress reports.
  • Facilitates faculty engagement through organization of meetings and retreats, and oversees public relations and conference/program planning for the Center, including an annual endowed lecture event.  Includes complex meeting scheduling, selecting and identifying topics of discussion for the development of relevant agendas, selects and prepares materials for discussion, preparation of minutes, serving as host for both internal and external collaborators and stakeholders.
  • Serves as staff lead for a research staff of 20+.  (providing educational programming, identifying professional development opportunities, matching research staff with project and PI needs).

Required Qualifications*
  • Master’s Degree
  • Minimum 2 years project management experience
  • Minimum of 7-10 years related experience, i.e. published in a field of specialty and academic knowledge in a field or discipline. 
  • Demonstrated previous experience performing budgeting and financial management activities. Familiarity with pre-award and post-award processes for sponsored research
  • Ability to organize, set priorities, and manage multiple projects simultaneously under tight deadlines; ability to manage multiple and competing priorities in a dynamic environment.
  • Ability to analyze, compare and evaluate various courses of action and make independent decisions on matters of significance, free from immediate direction, within the scope of their responsibilities
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, and experience presenting
  • Proven ability to function as a member of a team, build effective working relationships and demonstrate initiative
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and tolerate a moderate degree of ambiguity while still working collaboratively as part of a team
  • Experienced in using Microsoft Excel, Access, Word, PowerPoint

Desired Qualifications*
  • Master’s Degree in public health, health services research, health policy, public policy, or other health research related field or comparable work-related experience
  • Experience working in a research environment; Background or training in health services research, biostatistics, population health sciences, or similar methods desirable but not required; Experience managing electronic health data and user interfaces; Experience developing infrastructure for using Epic/MiChart data for research.
  • Working knowledge of academic healthcare
  • Interest in healthcare, especially population health

Monday - Friday days (not to exceed 40 hours/week)
