Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a motivated Postdoctoral Fellow for Public Health Research Institute (PHRI) in the Laboratory of Dr. Maria Laura Gennaro. Dr. Gennaro’s research summary can be found on the PHRI website (http://www.phri.org/research/res_pigennaro.asp). Dr. Gennaro seeks to advance the current knowledge on the immune responses to respiratory bacterial and viral pathogens such as M. tuberculosis and SARS-CoV-2 to identify markers of pathogenic and protective immune responses.
The Postdoctoral Fellow, under the direction of Principal Investigator (PI), will investigate immune responses to respiratory infections such as those caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis and SARS-CoV-2 to find biomarkers of infection outcome. Other job duties include record keeping, and writing reports for grant agencies and manuscripts for publication.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Culture primary cells and cell lines.
  • Carry out infections in BSL-3 laboratories.
  • Utilize robotics for liquid handling and automated ELISA instrumentation for high throughput antibody binding assays.
  • Prepare peripheral blood cells for subsequent single-cell or bulk analysis of proteins, nucleic acids, and / or lipids.
  • Perform studies of antibody effector functions and immunophenotyping of peripheral blood immune cells.
  • Perform confocal microscopy and/or flow cytometry.
  • Organize electronic records, data files and databases related to studies and experiments.
  • Assist in data analysis and presentation of findings at weekly meetings.
  • Participate in the evaluation of existing procedures, suggest revisions where necessary, and propose new procedures where required.

Minimum Education and Experience
  • PhD degree in biology, microbiology, or biotechnology.
  • In depth knowledge of immunological arrays (flow cytometry, ELISA, western blot, fluorescence microscopy) and preparation of samples for “omics” analyses of peripheral blood cells is critical.
  • Hands-on experience with mammalian cell cultures.
  • Experience on working in a BSL2 and a BSL3 environment is an asset.
  • A minimum of 1-3 years of experience in multi-parameter flow cytometry is a plus.

Standing, sitting, walking, talking or hearing required. No special vision requirements. Must be able to lift or exert force up to ten (10) pounds. Should be able to work with animal models of mycobacterial infection in BSL3 facilities.
