Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care (UBHC), established in 1971, offers a full continuum of evidence based behavioral health and addiction services for children, adolescents, adults, and seniors throughout New Jersey. UBHC’s 1,060 experienced behavioral health professionals and support staff are dedicated to treatment, prevention, and education. UBHC, one of the largest providers of behavioral health care in the country, has a budget of $260 million and has 15 sites throughout New Jersey. Services are readily accessible and include: inpatient, outpatient, partial hospitalization, screening, crisis stabilization, family/caregiver support, community outreach and case management, supportive housing, supported employment, prevention and consultation, employee assistance programs, and a licensed therapeutic school from preschool through high school. Specialty services include the New Jersey suicide prevention helpline and peer help lines for police, veterans, active military, teachers, mothers of special needs children and child protective service workers. In FY2016, UBHC treated 16,199 consumers, had 24,502 admissions, and touched the lives of 19,441 individual callers through peer support. In addition, UBHC is the primary mental health training resource for the New Jersey departments of Human Services, Children and Families, and Corrections, delivering 16,000 trainings each year.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Per Diem Peer Support Specialist III for the First Responder Peer Services Call Center within Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care.
The primary purpose of the Per Diem Healthcare Provider position is to provide assessments for fire and EMS professionals throughout the State of New Jersey that meet quality and quantity standards within the New Jersey Fire & EMS Lifeline Program. Receives telephone requests for service, undertakes clinical assessment of the service need of the client or customer, and responds by offering a scheduled appointment or making other appropriate referrals or disposition. Demonstrates competency in recognizing the unique needs of New Jersey fire and EMS professionals and applying relevant assessment and treatment skills with regard to a wide range of clinical issues and an age group that includes ages 15 years through 65 plus. A capacity for assessment services and management of all situations for fire and EMS professionals and their families will also be required
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • As part of the New Jersey Fire & EMS Lifeline team, actively participates in ensuring the telephone calls/service requests are handled in an effective and “consumer friendly” manner.
  • Assesses telephone service requests/referrals and responds in accordance with prescribed New Jersey Fire & EMS Lifeline procedures.
  • Assesses client’s clinical condition in order to make/authorize an appropriate disposition.
  • Acquires familiarity with other UBHC units, outside providers, and other pertinent organizations and resources, in order to facilitate telephone activities, develop work relationships, and provide information and guidance to callers.

COVID-19 Immunization Requirement

Rutgers University requires all new employees to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated and have received a booster (where eligible) against COVID-19 prior to commencement of employment, unless the University has granted the employee a medical or religious exemption. Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree plus one (1) year’s work experience in the human services field.
  • Candidate must be an active or retired firefighter, EMT, or dispatcher with minimum of 5 years career or 10 years as a volunteer.
  • Equivalent education, experience and/or training may be substituted for the degree requirement.
  • Applicants possessing a degree in Social Work must have an active New Jersey certification/licensure as required by the State Board of Social Work.
  • Must possess valid driver’s license or alternate means of transportation.
