The Dean’s Office within the School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) at the University of Virginia (UVA) seeks applications for a Senior Finance Associate. The School of Engineering and Applied Science consists of 8 departments across the field of engineering. The school has seen tremendous growth in student population and faculty, as well as in its research expenditures in recent years. Reporting to the Engineering Director of Finance, the Senior Finance Associate will co-lead financial operations and strategic investments of the UVA School of Engineering.

This position will lead or assist with all financial functions in the School, including, but not limited to:

  • Managing financial commitments to individuals and departments.

  • Managing internal awards.

  • Variance analysis in School units.

  • Reviewing and approving financial transactions for both Dean’s Office and some department cost centers.

  • Tracking endowments/gifts to ensure the School is maximizing the use of these restricted funds (professorships, research, etc.).

  • Performing and approving account certifications and will be the single point of contact for at least one cost center during their annual budget development.

This role will also:

  • Monitor operating budgets, expenditures, endowment income and foundation budgets, and advise leadership of necessary transfers or divestments.

  • Lead regular communication and financial training school-wide for implementations of financial practices and initiatives as well as help assess and align the School’s budgeting activities.   

The Senior Finance Associate will also help lead the School through the University’s FST. This individual will not only help prepare the School for go-live on July 1st but will be a major player in training and assisting Engineering staff and faculty post go-live. The individual will also play a major role in the balance conversion process happening after go-live.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance or Accounting

  • 7 years of experience in a financial discipline, preferably in higher education

  • Experience working with sponsored accounts

  • Experience using UBI and Workday

  • Experience interpreting and applying UVA and Commonwealth of Virginia policies and procedures, specifically those related to purchasing and reimbursements

  • Experience managing change in a unit/department

  • Creating managerial reports and presenting to leadership

  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with the UVA’s FST is strongly preferred.

Anticipated Hiring Range: $78,000 - $83,000 commensurate with education and experience.
