Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Cancer Registry Information Specialist I in the Office of the Director/Cancer Epidemiology Services/New Jersey State Cancer Registry at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey.
The primary purpose of the Cancer Registry Information Specialist I, under the direction of the supervisor, trains cancer registrars and health care professionals in abstracting, coding and quality assurance activities. Conducts cancer data collection, quality control and medical data correction activities for the New Jersey State Cancer Registry; assists in setting priorities, deadlines, and schedules in accordance with overall Cancer Registry Program goals; does related duties as required.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Serves as technical expert for quality assurance and/or data collection and correction staff as well as health care facilities to ensure reliability of medical data for analysis and research.
  • Assists in designing studies to assess validity and reliability of cancer data.
  • Manages projects assigned by supervisory staff.
  • Assists with work direction for field staff and works with health care facility staff responsible for cancer data collection as well as quality control activities associated with collection, preparation, and editing of cancer data.
  • Performs tasks associated with medical data corrections related to demographic and medical information such as assignment of primary site and histology, staging extent of tumor invasion, and proper correction of diagnostic and cancer treatment information.
  • Assists in developing and implementing educational and training programs for cancer registry staff and personnel responsible for cancer reporting in health care facilities statewide. Provides training in abstracting and assignment of topography, morphology and behavior fields, case finding, staging of tumors and use of cancer registry software to personnel in the tumor registry field.
  • Oversees the compilation of statistical cancer data for health care facilities on cancer incidence, treatment, and follow-up information.
  • Assists in the design, development and implementation of tracking systems to accommodate workflow and program organization.
  • Ensures that cancer data is submitted in a format compatible with NJSC R and NAACCR.
  • Assists with work direction for staff responsible for ensuring timely, complete, quality collection of cancer data by New Jersey health care facilities.

COVID-19 Immunization Requirement
Under Policy 60.1.35 , Rutgers University requires all prospective employees to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated and have received a booster (where eligible) against COVID-19 prior to commencement of employment, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption.  Prospective employees who are not eligible for a booster at the time of an offer of employment must provide proof they have received a booster within two weeks (14 calendar days) of eligibility .  Based on current guidance, individuals are considered fully vaccinated against COVID-19 two weeks after receiving the final dose of any COVID-19 vaccine authorized or approved for use in the United States by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  Eligibility for a booster against COVID-19 varies and is explained on the University’s web site located at https://coronavirus.rutgers.edu/covid-19-vaccine .  Failure to provide proof of primary vaccination and booster will result in rescission of a prospective employee’s offer of employment and/or disciplinary action up to and including termination.

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree plus five (5) years of experience as a tumor registrar in a central cancer registry, hospital, or other health care facility which shall have included responsibility for abstracting cancer cases, quality control, and conducting public health surveys, or patient care studies and evaluations.
  • Equivalent education, experience and/or training may be substituted for the degree requirement.
  • Appointees must possess a valid Certified Tumor Registrar certification issued by the National Cancer Registrar’s Association and the National Board for Certification of Registrars.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Demonstrated ability to perform lead responsibilities of the position.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
  • This multi-site position requires working in Trenton and New Brunswick, NJ and traveling to various locations throughout the state.
  • Possesses own vehicle or alternative means of transportation from one site to another.
