Overview
The Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O) employs a workforce of approximately 2,700 staff, represented by 15 collective negotiations agreements, and is responsible for institutional strategic initiatives and operations, which encompasses an expansive range of comprehensive service and business operations across the State of New Jersey. These include planning and construction, facilities, public safety and emergency operations, environmental health and safety, transportation, housing, and auxiliary/retail operations.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Maintenance Foreperson for The Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O). Reporting to the Senior Property Manager, this individual provides assistance with the daily operation, administrative functions and supervision for the Fleet Services area of Material and Logistical Services. This position ensures that all preventative and emergency maintenance is performed on vehicles assigned to IP&O areas and customers that utilize the on-campus garages. Will need to keep detailed records of all vehicles that are serviced within our GPS and Fleet Maintenance Systems, including keeping up to date pictures of the vehicle conditions and maintaining proper branding. This position will be responsible for identifying vehicles that should be repaired along with those that should be replaced through the Capital Replacement program.
Among the key duties of this position are:
  • Responsible for both guiding and instructing other staff in the performance of a wide range of automobile maintenance tasks in compliance with University standards.
  • Responsible for maintaining parts inventory and supplier accounts.
  • Responsible for creating work orders/quotes for customers, making sure all work is completed in a timely fashion and billing is accurate.
  • Responsible for responding to vehicles that are broken down and either repairing on site or towing back to the garage for repair.
  • Provide support and supervision for scheduled and non-scheduled University events that occur after-hours and on weekends.

COVID-19 Immunization Requirement

Rutgers University requires all new employees to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated and have received a booster (where eligible) against COVID-19 prior to commencement of employment, unless the University has granted the employee a medical or religious exemption. Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • High school/vocational school education or equivalent
  • A minimum of four years of experience performing automotive repair and maintenance.
Certifications/Licenses
  • Successful completion of an approved training program of a certified apprenticeship program in the trade area, plus two years experience and proven competency in performing complex and varied automotive maintenance and repair work may be substituted for the above experience.
  • Must currently have a Commercial Driver’s License Class B with air brake endorsement and certification in NJ Emissions repair.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Advance knowledge in performing complex and varied automotive repair and maintenance work.
  • Must be able to train and assist staff with repairs.
  • Excellent communication skills, the ability to read, comprehend and explain to others technical manuals, schematics and blueprints.
  • Must be able to operate tow trucks, hoist, jacks and automotive lifts.
Preferred Qualifications
  • ASE Certification is preferred, trailering and towing experience, NJDMVC inspectors license
Equipment Utilized
  • Wrecker and Flat Bed Tow Trucks, Winches, Lifits and Hoists, Tire Machines, Electronic Diagnostic Equipment, Welding Equipment.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Ability to work in the elements while handle physical requirements, including, but not limited to, repeated bending, stretching, twisting, and lifting up to 50 pounds
  • A valid driver’s license with two years driving experience is required.
  • Will be required to complete the Rutgers University Defensive Driving course.
