College Nine at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the position of Lecturer. College Nine maintains an ongoing pool of qualified, temporary instructors to teach sections of the College Nine Core Course, and/or regular 1, 2, or 5-unit college courses related to the college’s theme, International and Global Perspectives. Courses at College Nine address topics such as globalization, migration, human rights, global crises, and the United Nations.
All College Nine frosh are required to enroll in the College Nine Core Course. This course is taught in seminars of 20-25 students that meet twice or three times per week. There is a particular emphasis on developing students’ writing skills; students are required to write and revise several papers. Instructors also meet with students individually, provide feedback on students’ writing, prepare letter grade assessments of students’ performance, and carry out other instructional duties. Please note that all instructors of the Core Course use similar syllabi with the same reading and writing assignments.
Current regular college courses include a 1-unit global issues colloquium with an emphasis on China, and a 2-unit Model United Nations course.
RANK: Lecturer
SALARY: Starting salary is $6,127-$8,657 per 5-unit course, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s degree in a discipline relevant to international studies and/or writing such as anthropology, cultural studies, economics, environmental studies, history, political science, sociology, rhetoric, or writing composition. Past experience in university-level teaching, either as an instructor or a graduate student teaching assistant.
POSITION AVAILABLE: In the fall quarter for the Core Course, and as openings occur for college courses, contingent upon available funding.
