Summary of Responsibilities

The Dean reports directly to the Provost and serves as the chief academic and administrative officer of the School of Business. The primary responsibility of the Dean is to advance the academic quality and stature of the School that is student-centered, innovation driven, and entrepreneurial focused. This requires a visionary leader who is committed to strategic planning, inter-disciplinary collaboration, ethical leadership, and who is skilled in human and financial resource management. The Dean will assist with the advancement of WSU as an innovation university by focusing on increasing enrollment, workforce development, applied learning, funded research, tech transfer, and private fundraising. Close collaboration with on/off campus industry partners will be essential.

Minimum Education

  • Distinguished record of success in the academy and/or business commensurate with appointment at the tenured, full professor level; must possess an earned doctorate or equivalent from a regionally accredited institution.

Minimum Experience

  • Distinguished track record of teaching, research and service commensurate with appointment at the tenured full professor level

  • A strong administrative background with at least five years of successful experience at the rank of director, department chair or above or equivalent

  • Demonstrated experience with specialty accreditation processes such as AACSB

  • Demonstrated success in securing and managing external grant funding

  • Demonstrated success with development and fundraising

  • Demonstrated experience in cultivating industry partnerships

  • Successful experience working with and promoting diversity and inclusion among faculty, staff & students

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Effective interpersonal skills and highly proficient oral and written communications skills

  • Ability to clearly articulate the nature of the University and School missions within an urban setting

  • Ability to articulate School goals and alignment with, and in support of, the University mission and strategic plan

  • Ability to develop ongoing plans to increase undergraduate and graduate enrollment in-line with the University’s strategic enrollment management plan

  • Demonstrated entrepreneurial skills and an ability to leverage the expertise of faculty in order to enhance the economic capacity of business and industry of the greater Wichita metropolitan areas and the State of Kansas

  • Capable of working within a culture of shared governance based on transparency, trust, and integrity

  • Demonstrated understanding of and a commitment to working with the senior university and academic leadership consisting of the President’s Executive Team, Provost, the Associate/Assistant vice presidents for academic affairs, and the Council of Deans

  • Ability to work effectively with an advisory board

  • Ability to energize the faculty and champion a collaborative culture

  • Demonstrated skills managing financial resources and budgeting
