Summary of Position

The Red Rocks Community College Outdoor and Emergency Services Department is seeking an Emergency Medical Services (EMS) skills instructor.

Under indirect supervision this position is responsible for monitoring and teaching the psychomotor component of courses within the department. This position works closely with the EMS program director and course instructors to ensure each student has an appropriate educational experience in the lab setting. The skills instructor will utilize a variety of teaching methods in the practical lab that supports the principles being taught in the course and ensures the student has ample opportunity to master the skills required of an emergency medical provider. Feedback and correction will be offered as well as formal evaluations of student performance. Performance will be reported to the primary instructor who will be responsible for the actual grading and recording of grades. Additionally, skills instructors will be responsible for setting up and taking down skills stations and ensuring equipment is used appropriately and in accordance with its design. Skills instructors will address any inappropriate treatment of equipment by students and report any such activity or damage to the primary instructor and/or program director.

Part-time Instructors provide instructional duties for the College in their respective areas of expertise. They report to the department chair within the discipline and do not have any supervisory responsibilities. Responsibilities include instruction, student assessment, and other related instructional duties. Instructional delivery may include face-to-face, hybrid, and online. Classes may be held days, evenings, and weekends.

The instructor must be patient and respectful, while also providing their expectations for what is considered acceptable work. The instructor must display dedication to the class as well as the goals of the program. This posting will be used to fill multiple part-time Instructor vacancies. Finalist must be willing to make Colorado their primary workplace, including for online courses.

  • With a variety of methods ensures quality skills instruction for students as directed by the course instructor. Promotes student’s active participation in their own learning
  • Creates an effective learning environment that fosters student's intellectual curiosity and helps students problem solve using discipline-specific thinking strategies and knowledge.
  • Helps students reach their academic, personal, and career goals and fosters a safe environment that respects the diversity of people and ideas by modeling respect for all students and conveying confidence in every student’s ability to learn.
  • Performs assessment of students for content mastery and competence-based skills.
  • Sets up and tears down skills stations and ensures equipment is properly cared for.
  • Take ambulances for fuel.

 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Current Colorado EMS provider certification. Instructor will be limited to teaching courses consistent with their level of certification.
  • Valid Colorado driver’s license.
  • At least one year of active field experience as an EMS provider at the level being taught.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Associate’s degree in EMS, education, nursing, or closely related field
  • Current Colorado Paramedic, (PA, MD, NP, or RN may be considered if candidate has EMS or related emergency experience), or ability to gain certification within 3 months of employment.
  • Current Colorado CTE credential with endorsements appropriate for EMS, or ability to gain the credential within 3 months of employment.
  • Proof of completion of the Colorado EMS assistant instructor course within 3 months of hire.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in the patient care setting.
  • Experience that demonstrates knowledge and proficiency in state and national EMS regulatory requirements and education standards at all levels.
  • Prior experience as an EMS educator.
  • Membership in or experience working in diverse communities and supporting the success of individuals from racial, ethnic, and gender backgrounds that are underrepresented.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Ability to teach/supervise for appropriate level of training in the lab setting. Possess a commitment to student engagement, student success, and instructional excellence. Possess the ability to work in a diverse work environment. Demonstrate effective communication skills, both written and oral. Willing and able to teach day, evening or weekend labs. Ability to communicate and articulate concepts in an organized manner both verbally and in writing. Assess and suggest appropriate learning experiences available to the student with program objectives. Selection of patient care assignments for student in accordance with program objectives and student goals. Foster and maintain regular communication with faculty regarding student progress according to program objectives. Build positive and professional relationships with faculty, instructors, students, colleagues, and college administration. Exhibit a commitment to lifelong learning through participation in professional development activities. Ability to work independently and coordinate work with colleagues a nd peers. Ability to read and understand content in order to assist students when they are having difficulty interpreting concepts. Ability to interact in an effective and encouraging manner with students individually and in groups. Adhere to Red Rocks Community College’s policies and procedures. Attend institutional/departmental meetings as required.

Physical and Cognitive Demands: 
The following are some of the physical and cognitive demands commonly associated with this position:
  • Constantly uses a computer and routinely uses standard office equipment including phones, copiers, etc.
  • Cognitive demands include comparing, copying, computing, compiling, analyzing, coordinating, synthesizing, negotiating, communicating, instructing, and interpersonal skills.
  • The person in this position constantly communicates with internal and external constituents and students. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
  • Requires the ability to bend, as needed, to conduct skills consistent with the provision of emergency medicine and to take and replace equipment in storage rooms.
  • Requires the ability to see to observe students, and assess student performance.
  • This position include the employee be exposed to extreme environmental conditions to observe students and asses student performance.
  • This position requires the handling of sharp equipment and/or tools to use needles in a lab setting.
  • This position requires that the employee stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to hear to provide and receive verbal communication with instructions. Must be able to able to quickly stop students with verbal commands if a dangerous situation occurs.
  • Occasionally lifts moves, positions, pushes, and transports patients on a stretcher, weighing up to 150 lbs.
  • Requires the employee to drive. The employee will be required to provide a valid drivers license at the beginning of each calendar year.

Variable-Hour employees are ‘At-Will’ and their employment is not contractually ensured. Variable-Hour employees are required to establish and contribute to a Colorado Public Employees Retirement Account, and they will not contribute to Social Security under this classification. Variable-hour employees are permitted to work only 28 hours per week at schedules defined by their supervisors.
